Shortly after I rented my first house in León, I had some official-looking visitor knocking on my door, and I was honestly super worried.
My Spanish was basically zero, and their English was non-existent, so we ended up trying to communicate with sign language.
Her intention was pretty clear—she wanted to come insid*. But why, for goodness’ sake?
Coming from Europe, I found it quite strange for any authority to knock on my door and request entry.
Still, I let her in, a bit anxious about what would happen next.
As it turned out, the lady was actually really nice and friendly.
She entered the house and went straight to the backyard, where she inspected our concrete manual wash table.
As a good water-saving human, I had left some water in the sink for the next round of floor cleaning.
She gave me a gentle but firm look of disapproval, walked over, and without a word, pulled the plug to drain the water—making it clear that standing water wasn’t welcome in our backyard.
Then, with a friendly nod, she headed back out the door.
Later, as my initial uneasiness faded away, I realized she was simply inspecting for standing water in the backyard to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding.
So there you have it.
Don’t leave any little water puddles or containers out back, or mosquitos will multiply!
The health authorities just show up and check every once in a while—it’s nothing to worry about.
